How to shop for your first HDTV

realize this is an overly dramatic if not vague introduction for a how-to guide, but there is some truth to it. For those of us (which included me not too long ago) who have not been keeping tabs on the network television industry, there is a very important date to mark on the calendar: 17 February 2009. D-Day. Thanks to numerous corporate lobbyists and US Congress, all network television stations will stop broadcasting their analog signal on this date and complete the transition to digital broadcast. This will be the first time in US history that television broadcasting has established a change which is not backwards compatible. Analog television will be a relic of the past, and the digital age will complete its global presence.

In anticipation, some of the major networks have already made the switch to digital broadcast. Even today, several over-the-air (OTA), cable, and satellite broadcasts can be received in HDTV with the proper antenna and tuner. Analog television sets receiving over-the-air programming will still work after that date, but will require converter boxes to change new digital broadcasts into the older analog format. Cable and satellite subscribers with analog television sets will most likely add yet another box from their service providers which converts signal for the DTV transition.

How will you save yourself, your family, and loved ones? What you do to prepare for the future will depend solely on what you know about it. This guide will infuse months of research into a very easy to understand how-to article, all for the purpose of preparing you for D-Day.

How to shop for your first HDTV guide

Over the past three months of 2007, I have personally researched the subject of HDTV to great lengths. I went and read what everyone else on the Web had to say on the subject; but it doesn't take long to realize that old technology news often spoils overnight. Many of the guides out there talked about the upcoming digital transition as if it were wishful thinking, and others discussed how you would need an additional HDTV tuner to receive programming. Simply put, if the article, guide, or scrap of news pertaining to HDTV shopping was written prior to 1 March 2007, then it probably is outdated. You will learn why later in rule #1 below.

At first it was for the simple purpose of improving my grasp of the technology so I could make an informed purchase, but it soon developed into a full-fledged obsession to get the best product possible for my money. I found myself interjecting HDTV techno-quips at business lunches, if for nothing more than to take everyone else up a level from which I was once a part of. But still, what does all this have to do with a guide? Simply put, it's all relevant to the HDTV industry as a whole. It's the difference between buying obsolete from cutting edge.

This guide will educate you on the most relevant and essential terms used in HDTV today. Using this guide will ultimately save you days of confusing research, and will better prepare you to determine your HDTV and home theater equipment needs. But most importantly it will arm you with the necessary knowledge to make an educated purchase on a budget.

Power Supply Calculator

The Wattages listed are maximum peak wattage for each component. The total amount this calculator figures is for all devices running at peak utilization. It is important to bear in mind that this amount will never be reached under typical operation. However, I feel that this tool will give you a better idea of how much power your system will need.

After all - when it comes to power, having excess wattage on a power supply is never a bad thing!

Also, one other important factor is the amperage of the +12V rail. A good power supply will have a beefy +12V rail (18A or higher), or even dual +12V rails, as Antec does with their TruePower series. Also, beware that there are many 'imposter' power supplies on the market right now. I have seen power supplies labeled as 500 watt, when they are actually only 250 watts. There are three ways to tell if a power supply is labeled correctly, 1) Check the amperage on the +12V rail, 2) Check the price. If it claims to be 500 watts, but only costs $30, that should throw up all kinds of red flags to you. A true 500 watt power supply will cost between $90 and $140, and 3) Buy a brand name power supply. There are many knock-off supplies out there. Do a little research on the brand. Most 'imitation' companies have no website or a very poorly done website.

Remember that these are peak wattages. Even under full load, actual consumption is usually less than these figures.

Tips buy a new phone

1. ALWAYS START ONLINE

Service provider Web sites often have promotions that don’t carry over into the carrier’s stores. Rarely, if ever, does it work the other way around. A quick trip to the provider’s Web site might very well save you the extra legwork along with some cash.

2. HAGGLE

In 2003, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that service providers are allowed to engage in the ancient art of haggling with their customers. The court rejected the complaint of one woman that Verizon Wireless was discriminating against her by not offering everyone the same deals on service. This means that you can walk into your carrier’s store, and wheel and deal. It might not always work, but for the smooth talkers among us, it never hurts to try.

3. SWITCH PROVIDERS

One might expect that service providers would do anything within their power to make sure that their existing customers don't change teams. However, the most competitive prices on new handsets are offered to new members. If you're not too attached to your current service plan, the rebate offered on a new handset might be worth the minor headache of changing providers.

4. STICK WITH YOUR PROVIDER

If you’ve had a good experience with your carrier, it’s probably not worth the trouble of jumping ship. Carriers often provide incentive plans, which provide their customers with discounts after sticking with their service for an extended period. For example, Verizon Wireless offers New Every Two, which gives customers credit toward the purchase of a new handset at the end of a two year service plan.

5. TRY THIRD-PARTY WEB SITES
Third-party Web sites such as Amazon and LetsTalk have their own warehouses full of phones. While they go through the same carriers that the public does for service plans, they are able to set their own prices on phones, often times undercutting the post-rebate prices on handsets offered by service providers

6. CHECK OUT THE RETAIL STORES

Like third-party Web sites, retail stores such as RadioShack and Best Buy stock their own handsets, so they don’t have to adhere to the service providers’ phone pricing. The rub is that, unlike the service providers, the best prices are often not mentioned on the store’s Web site, and may actually require that you leave your house.

7. CONSIDER A USED PHONE

If you don’t mind second-hand electronics, the ever-growing marketplace for used handsets can provide a low-priced alternative to pricey new models. Cingular offers refurbished phones through its site. All refurb phones purchased through Cingular’s site are covered by a 90-day warranty. We found a used SLVR L7 for $99.99 with a two-year contract.

8. UNLOCKED PHONES

Unlocked cell phones are available through auction sites, such as eBay. Of course, unlike buying a phone though a provider, you’ll have to compete for a handset, and there’s always the distinct possibility of getting ripped off. Plus, unlocked models not covered by the provider may not offer all of the same features that a carrier-subsidized phone does.

9. GROUP RATES

Service providers have promotions from time to time, which allow users the ability to purchase multiple phones for a discounted rate, often two for the price of one. Promotions like these are especially fruitful for those with family plans.

10. READ THE BLOGS

Frequenting blogs like Phone Scoop and Engadget Mobile, which trawl the FCC’s site for the latest information on unannounced models (which the latter refers to as FCC Fridays) is a good way to find out which older models are going to be refreshed or replaced. Carriers often drop the prices on soon-to-be discontinued models.

11. E-MAIL ALERTS

Many online price comparison sites, such as PriceGrabber and NexTag, allow you to set target price alerts for products on their sites. Choose a product, set a price that you’re willing to pay, and the site will send you an e-mail, letting you know when one of their partner stores hits the price point, or dips below it.

HP Compaq 6910p

The HP Compaq 6910p delivers just about everything that business users on the go are looking for: performance, security, durability, and mobile broadband. Compatibility with Centrino Pro allows IT managers to remotely manage the system and push out important security updates, and the optical drive can be swapped for a weight saver or additional hard drive. We'd like to see a mobile broadband connection, but otherwise this notebook is a strong competitor to the Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61.

Donning a strictly professional exterior, the 6910p is designed to withstand daily abuse. Like the nc6400, this 5.2-pound notebook has a magnesium-alloy frame, as well as rubber bumpers around the screen and keyboard to protect the display. You also get the same in-mold lamination around the keyboard deck to prevent scratches and general wear and tear. What's new is the DuraKeys keyboard, a clear coating on the layout that protects the finish and printed characters. Last but not least is HP's Mobile Data Protection System 3D, which parks the hard drive heads when the notebook detects shock or vibration.

The left side of the system houses two USB ports and a FireWire jack, as well as a PC Card slot and the mic and headphone jacks. The DVD burner, another USB port, and the modem and Ethernet jacks line the right side, and a VGA port and S-Video port line the back of the notebook. A SD/MMC Card reader is on the front of the 6910p, which is surrounded by the speaker.

The 6910p's 14.1-inch, 1440 x 900-pixel LCD, which has a business-friendly matte finish, delivered bright and sharp images. As typical for a business notebook, the 6910p includes two input options--a pointing stick and a touchpad. Both performed well, but some may find the rubbery touchpad and pointing stick buttons a bit too soft. Above the very good keyboard are touch controls for HP's wireless on/off, presentation settings, and volume. Pressing the Info Center button pulls up a menu of quick links to Microsoft Office, HP ProtectTools Security Manager, and Wireless Assistant.

Security features abound on the 6910p, starting with a built-in fingerprint reader. You also get a TPM chip, hard drive encryption, and a smart card reader. IT managers will appreciate that the 6910p uses Centrino Pro with Intel's Active Management Technology, which enables remote manageability and blocks incoming threats to the network. This technology works in tandem with HP's Out of Band Management Console, a component of the company's PC Configuration Management Solution. This separate solution is free for HP customers to download directly from the Web site.

Our test system was powered by a 2-GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM. We had absolutely no trouble multitasking with the 6910p-we ran a virus scan while watching Two for the Money on DVD and didn't notice any stuttering. The notebook's score of 3,844 on PCMark05 is above average for thin-and-light notebooks. Dell's Vostro notebook with the same processor and RAM turned in a higher score of 4,683, but that system benefits from discrete graphics. The 6910p lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes on our DVD rundown test with Wi-Fi powered off. That means you should expect about four hours of runtime when performing productivity chores. HP offers extended-life batteries starting at $129.

The 6910p's 3DMark score of 1,682 is on a par with other notebooks with integrated graphics. If you need more 3D horsepower, you can opt for one of two other configurations with ATI Mobility Radeon Graphics cards, one with 64MB of dedicated video memory ($150 more than the UMA configuration) and one with 128MB of video memory ($30 more than the 64MB). Wi-Fi performance from the 802.11n radio was good, with 17.2 Mbps and 16.6 Mbps of throughput at 15 and 50 feet, respectively. The Bluetooth connection allowed us to pair both our Motorola RAZR and Jabra headphones-although we had to reset the device on one occasion.

To keep workers connected beyond hotspot range, the 6910p features a mobile broadband modem that connects to Verizon's EV-DO data network. Unfortunately, this system uses the slower Rev. 0 standard instead of Rev. A, which offers much faster uplink speeds. The 6910p took about 20 seconds to download a 1MB file via FTP and, on average, two to three minutes to upload the same file--a time that's definitely on the slow side. Firefox took over two minutes to download-on a par with other Rev. 0 notebooks but well behind those with Rev. A. HP also offers an HSDPA module that connects to AT&T's mobile broadband network; that costs $50 more, but it enables users to stay connected abroad. Users can also swap WWAN modules at any time after purchase.

Overall, the HP 6910p offers a good balance of mobility and power while offering the security and durability mobile professionals need. It feels like it's built to last beyond the three-year warranty. However, this $1,855 machine is a little too expensive for what you get. We prefer the ThinkPad T61 for its enhanced screen protection and better ergonomics ($1,588, when similarly configured at time of review) and the Dell D630 for its EV-DO Rev. A option (only $1,395).

How To Overclock the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Series

Overclocking can take on many forms, and the practice can range from minor product improvements to a total re-engineering project which completely alters the hardware. In this article, I will concentrate my efforts towards achieving the most gain with the least amount of effort.

Some industry voices have called overclocking a hobby, while others have compared it to product misuse. However, I believe that if you are reading this article, you are probably one of the many computer enthusiasts who believe it is perfectly acceptable to get something more out of a product without it costing more money. When I think about it, everyone enjoys getting something for nothing; it's human nature.

Additionally, it is human nature to blame someone else if something goes wrong. This is where I warn you, the reader of this article, that neither I nor benchmarkreviews.com recommend that you overclock your video card. This article explains how I conducted these experiments on my own property. Benchmarkreviews.com and the author of this article will not be responsible for damages or injury resulting from experiments you choose to conduct on your own property. If you read beyond this point, you are accepting responsibility for your own actions and hold Olin Coles and the staff of benchmarkreviews.com harmless.

NVIDIA has recently released their GeForce 8800 Ultra video card, which is now the crown jewel in gaming performance. However, computer hardware and gaming enthusiasts have learned is really just an overclocked GeForce 8800 GTX. Although this guide teaches you how to overclock all NVIDIA video cards, I have selected the FOXCONN NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS as my test subject. Most all of the older GeForce 6 and 7 generation video cards may also be overclocked using the same methods discussed here. In this how-to article you will learn how to turn your GeForce 8800 GTX into an Ultra, or you can overclock any NVIDIA video card for better performance; and do it all for free!

FOXCONN GeForce 8800 GTS Top View

Presently, the 640MB version of the GeForce 8800 GTS is the third-best video card available on the market, after the Ultra and GTX. Hardcore gamers and computer enthusiasts alike have already speculated on how the GTS could be made to perform to the same level as the GeForce 8800 GTX with some tweaking. Unfortunately, this just isn't possible because of architecture. What is possible though is taking a great product and making perform better; which is exactly what I did.

By default, the FOXCONN 8800 GTS operates with a 575MHz G80 GPU core clock speed, a 1188MHz shader, and a 900MHz (1800MHz) GDDR3 RAM speed. I will utilize the free overclocking utility ATITool v0.26 to search out the best clock speeds and simulate heavy graphic loading to establish stability. I will then make use of NiBiTor v3.2 which is another free tool to program a custom flashable video BIOS. After creating the new custom video BIOS with NiBiTor, I will use yet another free application, nvFlash, to program the new custom video BIOS onto the GeForce 8800 GTS.

 ATITool 3D View

Sure the name says "ATI" Tool, but the author has made this a great tool for both ATI and NVIDIA products for several years now. I have personally used many different tools for overclocking in the past, but this has proven to be the best tool for all my needs. After a straightforward installation and reboot (to complete the installation of the driver-level service), I open ATITool and see a lot of options confronting me. Try not to be overwhelmed, since all of these options could strike fear in the hearts of the inexperienced.

Getting Started

Before I begin, it should be noted that SLi sets should not be overclocked or tested together. Doing so may be possible, but the results will be very inaccurate and usually much lower. It is best to remove one video card while overclocking and testing on the other, and then vice versa. This allows each video card to achieve the highest possible individual overclock settings.

The first screen displayed will be the only screen that is really needed. While the memory clock speed copies its adjustments across all three performance levels (2D, 3D low power, and 3D performance), the software allows the user to make individual speed settings to the GPU core clock speed. Initially, the default values are saved in the profile named "default", but as you make changes you may save and delete profiles as needed. For this project, I kept raising my speeds and saving them into a profile named "MAX".

 ATITool Artifact Scan

To begin the overclocking process, I start by raising the temperature of the GPU core by using the "Show 3D View" button to display a rotating fuzzy cube. It is critical that the video card attain the highest temperature possible prior to overclocking, because the results of a cold overclock may prove unstable during gaming conditions. After reaching the loaded operating temperature, I change to the "Scan for Artifacts" view by pressing the button. Although I could have used the "Find Max Core & Mem" buttons to have ATITool automatically work out the best settings, I choose to manually test each incremental improvement on my own.

Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU Cooler

A TEC (thermo-electric cooler) also known as a "Peltier Cooler", is a solid-state active heat pump capable of transferring heat from one side of the device to the other. The Ultra ULT33186 ChillTec CPU cooler uses a TEC, sandwiched between two copper plates, each plate with four heat-pipes leading to a large fan cooled radiator. Because TEC's are capable of cooling below room temperature, often condensation is a concern. But not with the Ultra ChillTec.

Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU Cooler

The ChillTec's control unit does not apply power to the TEC unless the CPU reaches a certain temperature. Up to this point, the CPU is cooled by the heat-pipes on the "cold" side of the TEC. Once the CPU is hot, power is applied to the TEC and the CPU is chilled. The hot side of the TEC is cooled by the second set of heat-pipes. This perfect balance of thermo-electric cooling and heat-pipe cooling ensures the CPU is kept at the perfect operating temperature. Ideal for hardcore cooling, Benchmark Reviews will discover the potential advantages over standard air cooling solutions.

Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU Cooler

Ultra is a popular name amoung gamers and hardware enthusiasts. With a very wide array of products, it should be no surprise that they have opened their name to Peltier coolers as well. The Ultra ChillTec is just as colorful as other Ultra products, but even more so with the ULT33186 controller unit.

Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU Cooler

The Ultra ULT33186 ChillTec TEC controller unit features a four different color schemes on the LCD display, allowing you to install this device in any available 5.25" device bay and match the screen to the rest of your design. This control unit display also works very well in bright natural light environements, which allows you to disable the colored backlight to enable black-only LCD display.

Green Laser Pointer II

Okay, just about everyone has a red laser pointer. This is a special laser pointer because it a green laser pointer. Usually laser ponter is in red color. This pointer is significantly brighter (about 50 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. I mean come on, a 532 nm green laser wavelength is obviously superior to a laughable 650 nm red laser wavelength. And unlike a red laser, the green beam itself can be seen in mid-air in dark conditions, not just the laser beam dot. This allows the green laser pointer to be used for pointing to star constellations (skypointing) and also just generally look cool as hell. The green laser beam dot can be seen at much greater distances than with a red laser pointer.

Features of this unit include:

  • Very bright green laser at 532 nm wavelength
  • Output power of <5mw>

AKG K 24 P

This solid little headphone perfoms respectably as an inexpensive fold-up portable can. The sound is a bit uneven and bright, but in this price range there are few really good sounding headphones. Remember, this is an open headphone and therefore better for office/home applications than it would be at blocking out loud street noise and attenuating ambient sounds. When outdoors or in noisy listening environments, it's sibling, the k-26P model, will seal you away from outside noise much more effectively...It sounds way better, too -- so it's probably worth paying the extra few bucks!

The K24P headphone folds up into a tidy little lump that can be tucked into a velvety zippered pouch included in the package. The colorful yellow earpieces are distinctive and slick-looking. The low impedance factor of 32 ohms makes them suitable to be nicely driven by most portable audio players and laptop computers.

This very lightweight and portable headphone has a durable metal 3-D axis self-adjusting headband with ear pieces that swivel and fold inward toward the band. The earpads are flat foam pads. It has a "Y" headphone cord, 4 1/2 feet long, terminated in an angled 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug.

Best of all, what’s on Apple TV stays in sync: Anytime you change your library in iTunes, it changes on Apple TV — wirelessly, automatically.
Say you’ve downloaded Cars from iTunes. Instead of watching it on your computer, wirelessly sync the flick to Apple TV. Then pull up a seat, put up your feet, and play your movie on TV. Give yourself a hand: You’ve just changed the way you watch digital media.

Webcam with Telescope

Galileo is often credited with inventing the telescope, but you might be surprised to discover a Dutch lensmaker filed for a patent the year before Galileo created his "perspicillum." Actually, you might even find, 400 years previous, an English bishop wrote about using lenses to make distant things appear larger.
s a surveillance tool, webcams are awesome, but they're usually designed for close-up use - anything you want to see that's farther away than a few feet becomes tiny and pixelated. Finally, in 2007, somebody was smart enough to attach a 7x telescope to the end of a webcam. Now those distant things appear larger!

* 7x18 telescope, 50mm to infinity manual focus
* 480k CMOS Sensor
* 800 x 600 maximum resolution
